"There are countless reasons why "Wayne in Abruzzo" was truely incredible and an adventure of a lifetime. The small town of Gagliano Aterno was the perfect setting for learning about the Italian Culture, improving language skills, and building close relationships with each other, the Italian students, and the locals. With this atmosphere we had the opportunity to experience and observe the Italian mindset and way of living. The pace of life is maintained at a slow level, which allows to savor each moment rather than stressing through life. Another opportunity we had was getting to know and love the Italian students. They accepted us as their family and we created wonderful memories with each other that will remain in our hearts for a lifetime."

"a memory: walking. mountains. I feel so free, but there's simply not enough time to walk around in the mountains....One day early on, Will and I hiked upward. I went as long as I could without passing out from dehydration. We found a field to sit in and looking on at the hills, fields of sunflowers and haystacks, they seemed to me more like some painting I've seen at the DIA than something real.
I've feel that paintings portray life more accurately than photographs... but still they are prone to engender fantasy.
driving through at first, I felt I was right where canonized European canvases has been born. But it was someone else's memory that I was visiting, some painter of a past age. How could I too visit these vistas? How could I know them? How could this be? Today, these rolling hills are as real to me as the shirt I am wearing, the cobblestones in the courtyard. I can't say exactly how I got here, to feeling like an animal living here in this place, not like a human tourist.
But it has happened and I see these fields, these hills, idyllic landscapes, as places where real things happen, as places I have known. It's been a process and every moment has been sharp with feeling and heavy with loving the whole of the world I was born into, the continents I have yet to trek and may never see. But I know I've seen this place and known these people and muddied my feet in this dirt.
Knowing that, is the greatest memory."
"Un ricordo:.. A piedi le montagne mi sento così libero, ma semplicemente non c'è abbastanza tempo per passeggiare in montagna .... Un giorno, al mattino, Will ed io abbiamo fatto un escursione in montagna. Sono salita fino a quando ho potuto, senza svenire per disidratazione. Abbiamo trovato un campo per sederci e guardare le colline, i campi di girasoli e pagliai, che sembravano più simili ad alcuni quadri che ho visto alla dia che qualcosa di reale.
Ho la sensazione che dipinti ritraggono la vita con maggiore precisione delle fotografie ... inoltre stimolano la fantasia.
In un primo momento, mi sentivo esattamente come se fossi uscita da un dipinto Europeo . Ma mi sono accorta che ero nei ricordi di qualcun’altro, qualche pittore di un'epoca passata. Come avrei potuto io visitare questi paesaggi? Come avrei potuto conoscerli? Come è possibile? Oggi, queste colline sono reali per me come la maglia che indosso, i ciottoli nel cortile. Non posso dire esattamente come sono arrivata qui, a sentirmi come un animale che vive in questo luogo, piuttosto che come un turista umano.
Ma è successo e vedo questi campi, queste colline, paesaggi idilliaci, come luoghi in cui le cose reali accadono, come luoghi che ho conosciuto. E 'stato tutto un processo ed ogni momento è stato forte nel sentire e importante nell’amare tutto quello che c’è nel mondo in cui sono nato, i posti che devo ancora scalare e che potrei non vedere mai. Ma so che ho visto questo posto e conosciuto queste persone e infangato i miei piedi in questa terra. Sapere questo è il più grande ricordo."

"My favorite experience (besides seeing all of the amazing sights in the cities) from the trip was the night that all the American students cooked a traditional American Breakfast for dinner for the Italian students. I personally didn't cook anything (I'm terrible!), but just seeing the way the dining room filled up with laughter and friends eating together really wrapped up the entire trip for me. Watching all of us interact with each other as if we were family was probably the greatest gift I could get from this experience."
